INSIDER SCOOP WITH EMILY HEIN
Last week, MCMP spoke with Emily Hein, a Senior Story Producer at Insider. Emily shared with our members her responsibilities including formatting all Insider review stories into Insiders CMS, recruiting and onboarding story production fellows, and implementing and analyzing the usefulness of product tools. Along with working full-time for Insider, Emily also studies at New York University for her Master of Social Work MSW.
Emily is both a University of Michigan and an MCMP alum. Intermittently during her time at Michigan, Emily had multiple internships; PR for Comedy Central, Media for The Paley Center, Paramount Pictures, and Bunk1. She presented our members with valuable advice from her past and present work experiences, i.e. it’s okay to not know what you want to do, it’s okay to have many different interests, and over-communicate with your managers.
In addition to her advice, Emily gave our members some tips and tricks to succeed in future career endeavors. She was very realistic when telling the group that careers are not linear, but it does not always appear this way due to most people only speaking about their positive experiences. Emily advised us on utilizing our connections and advocating for ourselves because you never know when someone might be able to help you out. With that, she emphasized the importance of always following up with people after meeting with them.
Emily’s career journey is a story of inspiration. Key takeaways she has learned and shared with MCMP are saying yes to anything that piques your curiosity, not to discount internships or fellowships after college, and to be as patient as you can during the application process. Emily reminded our MCMP members that we are not our career and doing what you love is more rewarding than seeking work for other means.
Thank you again to Emily and to all who came to her presentation.
Next week on Tuesday, October 5, make sure to tune in to hear from Morgan Lerner, founder of Go Nanas LLC. Our event is at 7:00 PM EST in 2435 North Quad.
